The new iPhone 3G S (and why you don’t want one)

Posted by NZgeek | Filed under , ,

The latest news in the tech world is that Apple have announced a new model of iPhone, the 3G S. The “S” supposedly stands for “Speed”, a moniker which is appropriate due to its faster CPU.

What most people won’t tell you is that this new phone is already outdated before it even hits the shops.

You see, the iPhone has never really been the ground-breaking device that most people see it as. Yes, it did bring the brilliant multi-touch user interface into the world, but not really a lot else. Email, web browsing, WiFi support… all of these were available before the first iPhone was even announced.

Since then, Apple have been making half-hearted attempts to keep up with the rest of the market. The first iPhone 3G added a camera and 3G network (UMTS) support, but very few other hardware changes. The new 3G S has a faster CPU, increases the size of the camera’s sensor and allows video recording, but that’s about as far as the changes go.

Even the iPhone OS is lagging behind. With the new OS 3.0, Apple are finally adding a clipboard so you can cut-and-paste between applications. They’re also adding support for MMS messages, so you can send picture and audio messages. But these features have been found on rival phones for years. My old Nokia N80, several months old when the first iPhone came out, was able to do these with ease.

Apple still haven’t got things right. The iPhone still lacks Flash support, which means that a lot of web content is inaccessible. It also lacks Java support, meaning that you can’t run any of the thousands of Java games and applications that are out there. My old N80 is able to do both of these.

If you want to see what the 3G S should be, take a look a the Samsung i8910 (sometimes called the Omnia HD). Here’s a quick comparison of features:

  iPhone 3G S Samsung i8910
Battery 300 hours standby 600 hours standby
Display 320 x 480 360 x 640
Memory card slot No Yes
Camera 3 megapixel 8 megapixel with flash
Video recording 640 x 480 @ 30 fps 1280 x 720 @ 24 fps (HD 720p)
Video calling No Yes
FM Radio No Yes
Java support No Yes
Flash support No Yes
Video playback MPEG4, MOV, H.264 MPEG4, RealVideo, WMV, DivX, XviD, H.263, H.264
Audio playback MP3, AAC, WAV MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, RA
FM Radio No Yes
Multi-Touch Yes No

Aside from the Multi-Touch, the Samsung is clearly a much better phone, with a similar size and price. I know which one I’d rather get!

Quite simply, iPhone is very very simple to use and navigate. Menu functionality is amazing.

sure it has a hell of a lot more features but i dont know anyone that wants a phone that is that big and weighs a massive 600+ grams!!compared to apples 124g, for daily use(maybe as a multimedia player movies etc).Add to that it uses the symbian s60 operating system which hasnt earnt the 5800 many awards.Also the main reason the iphone is so successful is its proven reliability, easy user inteface and most of all the current 50,000 apps available in itunes. We'll have to wait and see, the iphone will be beaten at some point but i dont believe a 600 gram beast that uses a useless s60 operating system converted for touch interface will do it.

The press seem quick to pick up on the fact that there are 50,000 apps available for the iPhone. What they don't mention is that both the S60 and Windows Mobile operating systems have tens of thousands of native apps each, plus countless other Java and Flash apps.

As for the size and weight of the i8910, I'm not sure why you think it's big or heavy. If you compare the i8910 and the 3Gs, there's only a few mm difference in size and 12g in weight.

They really are competitors in every respect, except that the iPhone has a lot more hype around it.

Digital Camera Specifications

3G S is mainly a spec since most off what 3G S is bring new came to the 3G iPhone with the 3.0 firmware update. 3G S does come in a 32GB version which is pretty nice.

Samsung i8910 looks like a really nice phone and after seeing the above comparisons I would gladly trade my iPhone in for one any day.

Even though I'm probably replying to spammers, here I go...

@r4 sdhc
I haven't done huge amounts of research on jailbreaking the iPhone, but I have read that often firmware updates will modify the baseband (kinda like the phone's BIOS). This usually interferes with the jailbreak, and can sometimes brick the phone.

@Digital Camera Specifications
Yes, the 3.0 firmware does bring most of the features that will help sell the 3GS. However, there are a handful of new things (e.g. video capture, OpenGL ES 2.0) that require the new hardware.

@Plant containers
I agree. I'd take the i8910 any day of the week.

The 3GS's clock speed is about 30% faster than the old one. It's reportedly much faster than the original iPhone 3G. Then again, it's also reportedly getting too hot to hold up to your ear.
